(1) Development of mass spectrometric ionization methods, with special regard to atmospheric pressure desorption ionization techniques. Being primary inventor of Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI), Jet Desorption Ionization (JeDI), Rapid Evaporative Ionization Mass Spectrometry (REIMS) and Electrosonic Spray Ionization (ESSI) techniques. (2) In-vivo mass spectrometry. Mass spectrometric investigation of vital tissues using direct combination of surgical and mass spectrometric equipment for the real-time, in-situ identification of malignant tumors. Non-invasive investigation of intact skin using DESI-MS. (3) Processing of mass spectrometric profiling data by multivariate statistical pattern recognition methods, with special emphasis on principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). (4) Developing methodologies for dried blood spot (DBS)-based newborn metabolic disease screening, organizing and running national level newborn screening program. Exploring the microbial metabolism of xenobiotic compounds including industrial intermediers, pesticides and drug molecules using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques.
